Muttd20- Gamma World Spinoff
From the Beginning
Eeeep. Eeeep. Eeeep. Eeeeeeurrgleeep. Eeeep. Eeeep.
Buzz – buzzzzzzzzzzzz – clank – buzzzrzrzrzrrrrrr — ump. Sssssssssssss -
That didn’t sound right just now. Light blobs dance in front of your face. Who knows how long it took for the blobs to transform into blinking red lights on a panel a few inches above your forehead. Your eyes smart as they adjust from the effects of cryo-sleep. It feels like its been—what, fifteen minutes since you were conscious of the lights— or anything, for that matter?
A voice out in the dark on your left grunts, and then a sudden intake of breath, “Jeez us-that’s cold!” It was male, gravelly, and sounded to be 20-30 feet to that side.
You swing a leg out of your foam-packing to step onto the floor but instead dip your foot ankle deep into bone chilling liquid. It seems to have a lazy current.
There is a background gloom of red light illuminating the cryo-chamber. There are at least two men moving deeper among the pod-freezers, but looking over the displays of pods on your left and right it easy to see by their readouts whoever is inside is dead.
Hold up! Think! What do I remember, what do I know before I leap without looking.
Not much of a memory recall here – no family, no mom, no dad. – no school, or no nothing?! I haven’t the foggiest idea who I am, how old I am, hell- feel around a sec- OK, at least my gender isn’t in question. Where am I, what am I doing here, and Who the hell am I?
Exploring the passages and rooms around your wake point, its easy to draw the conclusion – this place is thoroughly looted. Your personnel locker was empty save for the finger print activated drawer at the bottom. Nary enough to outfit you for a long haul, you look elsewhere.
Fleeting and partial memories are coming back, and a CPU miraculously was operative in the Robot Repair wing.
It’s been nearly 300 years since you volunteered for PROJECT: NOAH. You were one of hundreds of volunteers frozen hoping to survive the Cactopic Stain blotting out many Chin-Russo provinces, two-thirds of Australia, and 12 United States of America, for that matter. It seemed like a good idea to sleep off the half life of whatever was mutating people on the other side of the world and this outfit had a steady job for you after you woke up.
Except, you didn’t wake up after 5 years. And your job’s history too – seems your employer went and died on you leaving only an empty building.
Deep in sub-station 6, up and out is the only way to survive this mess.
Exploring in the dark, our survivors slosh thru cold water into a hex layout of more cryo-sleep chambers. Each chamber was dead to power, filled with dead people, and cold water filling up the time remaining.
A quick exploration, splitting up to cover ground quickly, discovers a few grenades. The central stair was completely obstructed by a structural collapse of girder, masonry, and stone. A strut, sticking from the ceiling of cryo-creche-delta enabled Mar Rwar, Cuirgi Boghdoir, and Nakor to climb up to Sub-level Two.
Passing along an air shaft into a few storage rooms, the three were faced by the abscess created by the collapse over the central stairs. It was a 15-ft leap, which was made easier by a rigged grapple hook and line from some camping gear. Swinging across with seeming ease, Cuigi landed solid on the far side.
A tentacle beast waved its tentacles, attempting to grab a snack as it swang by. As luck would have it, Mar sailed right by.
Insert fight details, if you like. The tentacle beast died after two frag explosions and a truckload of isopropyl alcohol contributed to a fiery end.
The team tramped up another set of stairs to discover a robot repair/recharge facility. Power was holding at 30% from emergency generators, enabling access to a kiosk computer workstation. An information query was launched for details of current global status, as well as within the building itself.
Creeping up yet another flight of stairs, our intrepid explorers began poking about a maze of office cubicles. Buoyed by the confidence of discovered comlinks, they split up again to cover more ground. Cuirigi rounded a corner, and alone, faced 6 Hoops armed with crossbows. It was clear they were somewhat telepathic and possessed a hive mind (after they went from near zero fluency of Esperanto to 100% understanding in a 5 minute discourse). Cuirigi decided diplomacy was a better alternative to fighting – this time.
The Hoop tribe greeted Mar Rwar, Cuirgi Boghdoir, and Nakor and revealed they had settle the Dome several generations back. They traded with a local warlord to maintain a vestige of freedom, but they were running low on relics and modern conveniences to keep their pelts off the chopping block. NPC’s met: the hoop chief is Crux Hops’nomore, and braves: Hops’high, and Hops’far.
Additionally, the hoops provided a better understanding of the Dome. The cafeteria and a few connected rooms were home to nearly 40 hoops. The Dome was sealed off from the outside by a forcefield, but policed by a robot gun platform inside the field which prevented easy escape (currently, only the younger hoops could crawl through the 500 meter conduit pipe to the outside world).
Finally, the command and control center remained locked off from access, and after a quick attempt to hack the door lock, still in retention of electric power to its defenses.
