Cacotopic Stain

The Ancients awakened the earth itself, GAEA- in their final discovery which rendered science & magik one and the same. The initial effects transcended all expectations, bedrock running like water at the rhythmic gestures and spoken commands of a seismic thaumaturge. Projects of geographic grandeur were realized and launched. It was a new paradise, whereby men, women, and children were lifted to the highest culmination of human achievement – until a planet-wide plague warped the very bones of the planet. The landscape itself rose up against the culture which awakened it and its anger was tangible. Bursts of radiation from within boiling yellow mud mutated anything it touched, almost instantly. Seemingly intelligent earthquakes wreaked devastation on a society entirely dependent on its infrastructure. Power grids were destroyed, water mains were burst, railways were splintered and communication cables severed. Impossible mudslides guided themselves to flow uphill and mutated hundreds if not thousands of hysterical citizens. The age of enlightenment had slipped away.

There are still many regions across what was once known as North America and China where the very landscape is infected with the same cancerous mutability that characterizes its animal species. Even solid stone cannot be relied upon to retain its form — it may become smokestone, which can turn to vapor and solidify again without warning, engulfing unwary travellers even more swiftly than a sudden lava flow. And at the heart of the continent lies the Cacotopic Stain — the ‘bad place’ that is the epicentre of the reality distorting strangeness.

Experiments of the Ancients, aka, Tectonic Torc Project still reverberate today.
